What is the difference between a CONSERVATOR and a RESTORER.

Many people are confused about the difference between an art conservator and a restorer.  To the layperson there is seemingly no difference and the terms are used interchangeably.  However, this is very much not the case and the gulf between "restoration" and "conservation" is rapidly widening.  Art conservators are generally academically trained to at least the level of a Master's degree (M.A.C. – Master’s of Art Conservation – see FAQ on Where do I get conservation training?).  They have training in the scientific, art historical and artistic aspects and requirements of works of art.  Fine art conservation is relatively new (only the last 50-60 years, since WWII) whereas restoration has arguably existed since the beginning of the creation of art when artists restored their own or others' works.  Restorers tend to have been trained as artisans (often apprenticed to artists) or have learned by experience.  This type of learning is a necessary but not sufficient condition to treat works of art in a manner that will reliably ensure their survival.
Conservators attempt to perform the minimum treatment necessary and use as many reversible materials as possible – this is considerably different than a restoration approach.  Conservation addresses the work of art not only from the aesthetic but from a materials point of view.  The structure of a work of art must be thoroughly understood and preserved in order to preserve the image.

На холмах Греции. Неоклассическая резиденция в Калифорнии, созданная дизайнером Сьюзан Такер под влиянием греческих и грузинских декоративных традиций.

Дизайнер Сьюзан Такер (компания Tucker & Marks) успешно совместила эти два направления. Пять лет она трудилась над воплощением своего замысла совместно с другими известными дизайнерами и мастерами. Щедрость заказчиков и их готовность к экспериментам позволили дизайнерам использовать в оформлении жилья необычные вещи и настоящий антиквариат.
С помощью разнообразных предметов декора удалось создать очень характерную обстановку, отражающую личные предпочтения хозяев. Для каждой гостевой комнаты Такер придумала свою тему: есть комнаты в стилистике бидермейер, есть – в итальянском духе, есть – в китайском…
Стены комнат «бидермейер» декорированы шелковыми кремовыми обоями.
Гостевые кровати покрыты тончайшим белоснежным бельем с классической синей отделкой, в тон подобраны и пледы. В итальянских комнатах преобладают терракотовые и коричневые оттенки. Шторы и балдахины вышиты переплетающимися цветками – этот узор перекликается с причудливыми позолоченными листьями на рокайльной люстре. В китайских гостевых стены обиты мягкой материей и украшены старинными портретами времен императора Цяиьлун (около 1738 года). Кровать драпирована вельветом насыщенного шоколадного цвета. Декорированное стеклярусом зеркало и люстра в форме падоги завершают картину.
Мраморный пол для комнаты хозяев был изготовлен по специальному заказу. Самый яркий акцент в этой комнате – огромное английское выпуклое зеркало XIX века. Для гостиной дизайнеры выбрали светло-коричневую гамму и блестящие антикварные итальянские люстры. В столовой гости могут любоваться ручной росписью в технике гризайль (арт-мастерская Сергея Константинова). Изящное дополнение – антикварные бра из золота и слоновой кости.
Есть в доме и отдельный зал для завтраков – просторный, залитый светом, он смотрится особенно жизнерадостно благодаря шторам лимонного оттенка и аналогичной по цвету обивке стульев.
Сама Сьюзан так отзывается о своей работе: «Это было словно долгое упражнение в создании красивых форм и объемов. Все для того, чтобы сделать интерьер этого величественного, масштабного дома запоминающимся
